XLCue Exporting The Show

Page history last edited by aff@... 15 years ago

Directions:

On the CueList worksheet, click the "Export Show" button.  Choose where to save the resulting file (and rename it if desired).

This will write a USITT ASCII file containing your Cues, Submasters, Groups, and Patch.  The file is ready to be imported directly into a lighting console or off-line editor like ETC's Express Off-Line Editor.

Practical Note:

It is highly recommended that you take advantage of this time (exporting) to keep versions of your show.  If you make changes that you don't like, you can then go back to an earlier version of the show, rather than painstakingly reversing the changes.

Many designers and programmers do this on a console by saving a show to two different floppy disks, alternating disks for each save.  With XLCue (or any off-line editing tool) and a modern computer, the size of your saved file is trivially small, so there's no good reason not to save every version of the show.  It is best to give each version a date and time stamp, like the default export name ("Showfile200903181055.asc" for a show saved at 10:55 AM on Marc 18th, 2009).  You can also add a descriptive phrase, such as "Showfile200903181055BeforeTech.asc".  Finally you can use a more descriptive term than "Showfile", so your actualfilename could look like "FullMontyShowFile200903181055.asc".

It is also a good idea to occasionally save versions of your XLCue file.  XLCue doesn't care what it is named- instead of "XLCue2.xls" you can use "FullMontyXLCue20090318.xls".

What's the RawCueList?

XLCue begins by processing your information on the CueList worksheet into a simpler form, almost identical to how Submasters and Groups are defined.  This data is stored on the RawCueList worksheet before being written to a text file.  The RawCueList is generated even if you click "Cancel" instead of choosing a name for your text file.  This can be useful for debugging not only the VBA code but the way you've configured a CueList.
